Baby Crib
A newborn spends most of the day sleeping, so a baby crib
should be a safe and comfortable place. In 1973 the government set new
standards to improve crib safety. However, about 50 infants are killed
each year and almost 10,000 are injured in crib related accidents.
Parents shopping for a baby crib should avoid a crib on rollers if
they have older children in the house. An older sibling could potentially
push the crib around and tip it over. If there is an older sibling,
get a crib without wheels.
For safety's sake make sure the baby crib has a firm mattress. This
will minimize the possibility that an infant will suffocate. A mattress
that is too soft can lead to re-breathing. This occurs when an infant
inhales his own exhaled carbon dioxide which can lead to illness or
even death.
